Deux Soldats Winemaker’s Red Blend | 2018 | Walla Walla Valley, Washington

The Soldier’s Blend

Only 260 Cases Ever Made
LIVE Certified
Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc

The Walla Walla Valley’s warm, dry summers produce Washington State’s best reds. This 2018 French blend comes from Deux Soldats (French for “two soldiers” – owners Eric and Ruthann founded the winery after 20+ years of US Army deployments).

Eric and Ruthann used a low intervention method (known as “LIVE”) followed by 18 months in French oak. You’ll find classic cab sauv/syrah notes like red fruit and spice, held up by a strong cab franc/petit verdot body. With ripe dark cherry, raspberry jam, and a dash of pepper on the palate to complement the sparkling tannins.

Tamber Bey Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon | 2018 | Napa Valley, California

The Calistoga Cabernet

1,200 Cases Ever Made
Calistoga Region of Napa
Cabernet Sauvignon

Founded in 1999 by Barry Waitte, Tamber Bey is a family owned and operated business that produces wines from its two estate-owned vineyards in the heart of the Napa Valley. The winery is located at the Sundance Ranch in Calistoga, a world-class, 22-acre equestrian facility that is dedicated to training top performance horses.

Tamber Bey focuses on single varietals, obsessing over source. The result is this opulent 2018, with a heavy dark cherry presence – coloring, nose, and palate. You’ll also find a bit of earth in the nose that becomes a hint of tobacco and leather in the mouth. Blueberry and rhubarb join in as well, leading the whole to a long, smooth finish.

Muscardini Cellars Tesoro | 2019 | San Francisco Bay, California

The Californian Super Tuscan

Central Coast, California
1,979 Cases Ever Made
Gold Winner, San Fran Chronicle Wine Competition
Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

Tesoro continues an important legacy for owner and winemaker Michael Muscardini, whose grandfather made wine in Italy before emigrating to America in 1909. Fifteen years ago, Michael Muscardini first blended sangiovese, syrah, and cabernet grapes to create his signature Super Tuscan style Tesoro (“treasure” in Italian), an homage to his grandfather and his Italian heritage.

Michael calls his method “new world thinking with old world drinking” and it works wonders in this 2019, a Gold winner in the San Francisco Chronicle’s wine competition. Notes of roast walnut, tobacco, clove and berries in the nose; with blackberry, plum and dark chocolate on the palate.

Iron Horse Vineyards UnOaked Chardonnay | 2019 | Russian River Valley, California

The No-Nonsense Chardonnay

Sonoma, California
Founded 1976
No Oak, No Malolactic Fermentation
Single Estate

Iron Horse, located in the cool fog of Sonoma’s northern Green Valley, uses a targeted approach to the management and fermentation of their grapes (specialized treatment lot by lot, even vine by vine). This bottle of UnOaked was no exception, with the winemakers deciding how each lot of chardonnay grapes should be handled (e.g. immediate pressing or cold soak) as they entered the winery. In vinifying this 2019 they eschewed both oak and malolactic fermentation (the secondary fermentation that produces the extra “buttery” effect).

The lack of butter and oak make space for a fine nose of red apple, lychee, and dried fruit, with the apple continuing onto the palate where it mixes with a hit of lemon and a ripe pear finish.

Bouchaine Estate Pinot Noir | 2018 | Napa Valley, California

The “Cherry Cola” Pinot

Carneros District, Napa, California
Founded 1880s
Hand Harvested, Native Yeast

The pinot noirs from the Carneros district at the southern tip of Napa and Sonoma are known for having a hint of “cola.” Perhaps it’s from the clone types (US pinot noir vines are clones of old European vines). Perhaps it’s something in the soil – pinot noir is a grape that seems to soak up terroir like no other.

In this 2018 from Bouchaine – the oldest continuously operating winery in Carneros (since the 1880s) – the cola makes its appearance in the nose, before mixing with cherry and strawberry on the palate. Not to say that this pinot noir is overly fruity. You’ll also find some cocoa and spice in there. From grapes hand harvested at night, followed by a week-long cold soak all in the service of preserving and extracting maximum flavor, Bouchaine’s Estate pinot combines the best of Napa’s bright elegance with Sonoma’s earthy depth.

Tercero Verbiage Rouge | 2015 | Santa Barbara County, California

The Californian Châteauneuf

Santa Barbara, California
Micro-Producer
42 Months in French Oak
Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault

Perhaps inspired by the round-top hill wineries of southern France, winemaker Larry Schaffer eschews the Bordeaux and Burgundy styles favored by most California winemakers and looks instead to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

He gets pretty darn close with his Verbiage Rouge, from foot-stomped grapes, with whole cluster fermentation and 42 months aging in French oak. Yes, this is a wild beast of a wine, even after all that aging. Note the bramble fruit, earth, and tea leaves in the nose. The mourvedre and syrah hit their peak after a second on the palate; enjoy the long finish.

This quarter, we return to the USA — specifically the West Coast of the United States — to help support the small producers most vulnerable to economic instability. And of course, to find “something rare, something special,” as Julien Miquel would say.

About the Bonner Private Wine Partnership

Founded by Will Bonner, the Partnership is a group of wine lovers who come together to import great, small batch wines that might otherwise get overlooked by large importers.

No middle men. No additive-packed supermarket wines. No inflated costs.

WE CANNOT SHIP TO THESE STATES:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah

If you live in one of these states, you’ll need to select an alternative delivery destination.

Please be aware: We cannot deliver to P.O. boxes.

An adult signature is required for all shipments of alcohol.

A note about our Satisfaction Guarantee: Wines, sadly, are not like power tools. A hardware store can always resell a hammer you used a couple times. Not so for a bottle of wine. Once you pop the cork, it’s a total loss to us. For that reason, we cannot offer full refunds on these offers. But don’t worry, if the wine arrives and there’s something wrong with it, just give us a call and we’ll do what we can to make it right. As a Bonner Private Wine Partnership member, your satisfaction is all-important to us.
