Raso de Larrainzar Reserva | 2013 | Navarra, Spain

The French Spaniard

Avg. vine age 30 yrs
90 pts (Suckling)
Traditional Method

The Larrainzar family acquired this estate in the Navarran village of Ayegui 150 years ago. Located relatively close to Bordeaux, Navarra has long been a part of the cultural exchange of French and Spanish winemaking, which lives on in this wine: two indigenous Spanish grapes, tempranillo and garnacha, and two from Bordeaux, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

The Larrainzar winery lies on the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), alongside a ruined monastery and 150-year-old tempranillo vines. Some say Navarra reservas are essentially back-door Riojas. And the stony clay soil here is, geographically speaking, a Rioja Alavesa soil. But the hint of chocolate and spice underneath classic tempranillo flavors of black cherry and plum make this elegant 2013 a wine all its own.

Balnaves "The Blend" | 2016 | Coonawarra, Australia

From Australia’s famous Terra Rossa soil
Grown in the blood-red clay of Australia

Balnaves’ Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975 on South Australia’s famed blood-red Terra Rossa strip. Its vines are now fully matured -- some reaching 40 years of age. Their maturity, and their struggle in the dense clay and limestone, comes through in an intense nose of berry, smoke, and coffee. Yet this wine knows when to pull back, remaining balanced on the palate with hints of bay leaf, blackcurrant, and eucalyptus

Stolpman Vineyards Estate Grown Syrah | 2018 | Ballard Canyon AVA, California

Syrah from “The Wine Whisperer”

Dry farmed
100% wild yeast

Ballard Canyon’s syrah rivals any in southern France. This 90+ point 2018 is full of deep rose & fresh berries; that freshness likely comes from the fact that vignerons Ruben and Maria Solorzano insisted on hand harvesting at night (Ruben’s methods have earned him the nickname “the wine whisperer” from Wine Enthusiast). The vines were also dry farmed (no irrigation) forcing the roots to dig deep into the limestone soil to survive.

This 90+ point 2018 has been compared favorably to St. Joseph. It’s like walking through the garden of a ruined stone church after a heavy rain. Stone. Mortar. Rose and fresh berries. A hint of smoke in the air.

Bremerton Selkirk Shiraz | 2017 | Langhorne Creek, Australia

The “Deep Water Secret”

Grown in an active floodplain
Blue Gold winner, Sydney Wine Competition
90 pt (Halliday)

When Langhorne Creek isn’t underwater, the flat floodplain quietly produces some of Australia’s best shirazes. (Shiraz is the Australian name for syrah.) At the heart of Langhorne Creek, the Willson sisters eschew excess chemicals to make a shiraz called Selkirk, named after their grandfather’s ancestral home in Scotland. Their winery, Bremerton, has been in the family for over three decades now. Since 1997, family winemaker Rebecca Willson seeks the best possible fruit from various (including her own) Langhorne Creek vineyards to craft traditional wines. Lucy keeps the business end humming along.

The richness and dark plum of Selkirk reflect the incredibly rich soil. But don’t fear. In the nose, this wine is all pepper. In the mouth, it’s balanced with supple tannins (18 months in fine grain American oak), rich fruit and smoke.

Verdon Estate N.3 Blueline Vineyards Red Blend | 2018 | Napa Valley, California

The “Californian Gaucho”

Top 1% wines of the world, Vivino
30% malbec

This is a “napa cab”, but with an Argentine twist. Note the 30% malbec – like Bordeaux of old, but the experience is more like a great Amarone. Malbec often grows poorly in California. Finding it here is a treat.

We have winemaker Kevin Morrisey to thank. Having gone to UC Davis relatively later in life (35 years old), Kevin nonetheless got off at a sprint, working first at Château Petrus (known for its $8,000 bottles), then at Stags Leap for close to a decade.
This 2018 is begging for a steak and maybe a piece of hard cheese. You’ll find notes of plum, toasted almond, dark chocolate and even (some claim) eucalyptus (don’t ask us – our palate wasn’t good enough to find it). Swirl it around for a moment and gaze at its fine legs. And be sure to savor the long finish.

Mas de Leda | 2018 | Tierra de Castilla y León, Spain

The Old Vine Tempranillo

Old Vines (avg. age 50 yrs)
90 pts (Wine Advocate)
Organic, Dry Farmed, Indigenous Yeast

In northwestern Spain, on the plains of what was once the Kingdom of Old Castile, the Masaveu family (winemakers since the 1800s), produce limited batch, high quality wines with an obsession on soil. Their partner, Mariano Garcia, is a “Master of Duero” – Spanish aficionados will know him from Vega Sicilia, Spain’s answer to Latour, and the first vineyard to prove what Ribera de Duero could do.

The winery, Leda, lies just outside Ribera’s boundaries, nestled between it and the smaller Toro region to the west. This 2018 (organic, dry farmed, indigenous yeast) combines grapes from both regions to create an expression of tempranillo completely different from the Rioja in this collection. With 90 points from Wine Advocate, a red fruit and balsamic nose, and a long silky finish on the palate.
