Jose “Pepe” Galante is widely considered the most important winemaker in Argentina’s history. Chief winemaker at Catena Zapata from 1976 until 2010, he showed for the first time that Argentina could make world-class wines.
Founded in 2010, Puramun is Pepe’s first-ever personal project, owned by his family. With this Reserva Chardonnay he seeks an elegant and complex wine with flavors of citrus and a chalky minerality that reflects its Paraje Altamira terroir. At 3,500 feet, these vines are subject to harsh sun and very little rainfall.
Soils are sand, silt and stone. Once a river bed, there is plenty of gravel in the topsoil, providing good drainage to the vines. The soil contains very little organic material, which helps reduce yields & increase the quality of the grapes. Volcanic material in the soil from the Tupungato volcano provides plenty of minerals for vine health.
A bold and round style with a pale, bright straw-yellow color. Ripe stone fruits, pineapple, baking spices and a hint of sweet nutty oak on the nose. Weighty peach and orange flavors hold through a long finish.
