Bremerton Selkirk Shiraz 2017 – When Langhorne Creek isn’t underwater, the flat floodplain quietly produces some of Australia’s best shirazes. Bremerton winemaker Rebecca Willson seeks the best possible fruit from various (including her own) Langhorne Creek vineyards to craft traditional wines, while her sister Lucy runs the business. The richness and dark plum of Selkirk reflect the incredibly fertile Langhorne creek soil, but in the nose, this wine is all pepper. In the mouth, it’s balanced with supple tannins, ripe fruit and smoke. 90 pts (James Halliday)
Langmeil Legendary Cabernet 2017 – Among the orchards and barley fields of the Barossa Valley, lies Langmeil, home to the oldest shiraz vineyard in the world (est. 1842). The winemaking, too, feels old fashioned – open fermentation, handpicked grapes, zero filtration or fining, and a double pressing method that lasts 20 hours.
Helen & Joey Estate Layla Pinot Noir 2018 – “The Cold Soaked Pinot” – In 2018, winds from the Great Southern Ocean swept over the Yarra Valley to create an ideal microclimate for this cool pinot. Owner Helen then cold soaked the grapes for 4 days to kickstart a natural, “in the vineyard” fermentation (she’s all about terroir). Only 700 cases made; 92 pts (James Suckling)

Durell Vineyard Sojourn 2017 (Sonoma, CA) – Most of the original chardonnay clones to reach California were lost to Prohibition. C.H. Wente’s clones, however, survived. When many neighboring vineyards were once again threatened by extinction, this time by wildfires, the Old Wente clones of Durell Vineyards once again survived, their grapes harvested at night, just in time. We’ve written at length of our distaste for overly oaky, buttery CA chards. This is not one of them. The nose is a basket of freshly picked citrus and tropicals, with a salivating, silky touch on the palate. (93 pt – Robert Parker)
Stoneridge Vineyard ‘El Jefe’ 2016 (Wahluke Slope, WA) – Charles Smith is a name to know if you’re into Washington wines. He’s hard to miss with his big rock n’ roll hair and his no-nonsense scowl. El Jefe is a fittingly rebellious wine (tempranillo in Washington State?) for a true rebel at heart – from hand- (or rather foot-) crushed grapes, wild yeast, and a vineyard irrigated with 100% recycled water. Yet, there’s also a real elegance here (think fresh cherry). Prepare for a surprise hiding between the nose and the palate. (93 pt – James Suckling)
Peju Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (Rutherford, CA) – Ah the famous “Rutherford dust”! You’ll have to make up your own mind as to what exactly it tastes like. Some say cacao power. Some say chocolate. Or could it be cloves? More bedeviling still, we can expect a lot of (great) changes to this wine and its dust over the next decade. A worthy investment from Provence-cum-California winemaker Tony Peju. Note the rich cedar, tobacco, and a little vanilla. Then open a bottle in five years to see what they’ve become.

Giannikos ‘the Lion’ 2017 (Greece) – Giannikos is the oldest winery in this collection (founded in 1896 and still family owned), and the air of tradition is apparent: their 2017 agiorgitiko tastes like something an ancient king would like. Winner of the Silver Medal from AWC Vienna (the “OSCARS” of wine) six years in a row. Handpicked, organic grapes. Pair with grilled sausage, fresh tomatoes, and pasta.
Domaine Eric Poli Vin de Corse 2018 (Linguizzetta, Corsica) – Made for the Bonner Private Wine Partnership – Winemaker Eric Poli, already working in Corsica’s most lauded northern appellation, has managed to bring winemaking back to his birthplace on the east coast of the island. The name comes from the Corsican for “black and dry,” a good descriptor for this robust, Rhône-like red with black cherry on the nose, and firm tannins on the palate. (91 pt – Wine Advocate)
Zisola ‘Doppiozeta’ 2016 (Noto, Sicily) – Zisola’s nero d’Avola grow in the 3,000-year-old “albarello” style: small, tree-like shapes that maximize aeration and sunlight while keeping the grapes low enough for a tempering influence from the earth.The point is to pummel the vines with sun, while still getting a slow, even maturation. Add to that a dry, calcareous soil and you get this “muscular” wine, with notes of tobacco and deep fruit. That muscle should turn to wisdom with age – more Socrates, less Achilles. Drink 2020 to 2035. (91 pt – James Suckling)

2011 Ricasoli Torre Della Trappola (Tuscany, Italy) – This small production of Brunello di Montalcino comes from selected grapes grown in the vineyards located on the southeast facing slopes of the Montalcino area, which are vinified using the most modern cellaring techniques. The production plant is manual as to obtain low yields per hectare. Classic colour with garnet hues. The nose shows ripe red fruit, cherry, spicy notes of liquorice and chocolate. The mouth is intense with well-balanced tannins; the strong flavour sensations recall memories of the nose hints. (92 pt – Wine Spectator)
2011 Ricasoli Historia Familia (Tuscany, Italy) – Historia Familiae was selected by Ricalosi to celebrate the 20th anniversary of when Francesco Ricasoli became head of the family business. The wine is dedicated to the Ricasoli ancestors who, over the centuries, have been preserving Brolio and its unique historical values.” Rich and supple in texture, boasting black cherry, black currant, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. A solid version, flavorful and vibrant, with a refined presence. Ends with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. (94 pt – Wine Spectator)
2010 Barone Ricasoli Castello Di Brolio Vin Santo (Tuscany, Italy) – The Castello di Brolio Vin Santo, true to tradition, expresses one of the “historic” grapes of the area, Malvasia del Chianti. Its production method also stays true to tradition. Brilliant Amber yellow color. To the nose, hints of toasted hazelnuts and almonds blended with custard and figs. The taste is warm, soft and velvety. A pretty long and persistent aftertaste, enhance the olfactory sensations on the finish. (98 pt – Wine Advocate)
