A Note From Mariah Bonner:

My dad didn’t buy Gualfín to grow grapes. He bought it because he fell in love with its majestic beauty. Nestled in the Calchaquí Valley, in the Northwest of Argentina, Gualfín, a ranch of several thousands of acres, functioned mostly as a cattle ranch. But Dad soon discovered that the place was too remote, too high, and too dry, providing little nutritious pasture to sustain a profitable herd.

As it turned out, the previous owner had planted a small vineyard of malbec grapes in Pucarilla, a part of Gualfín located at 8,421 ft, about a three-hour horseback ride from the “sala”, the main ranch house.

By the time he discovered it, the vines were overgrown. It took over a year to prune and nurse the vines back to health. And several more to teach the gauchos, more comfortable roping bulls, to harvest the grapes.

Finally, in 2012, the vineyard yielded a decent harvest and the graoes were taken to our closest neighbor in Tacuil (a mere hour’s drive away), winemaker Raúl Davalós.

The resulting wine was the sweetest nectar I’d ever tasted, almost black as pitch, and thick as blood.

It smelled of blackberry, leather, and smoke. Each sip gave me a zing! of cherry and cloves.

Raúl was pleased. He proclaimed it “almost as good as mine.” A high compliment. Although almost impossible to find in the US, his wine gets 90+ points from Robert Parker.

Tacana was imported to the US – then called Valle de Salta – for the first time in 2013, for my sister’s wedding. That was a party for the books. “Who knew our relatives could dance like that?”, commented one of my brothers.

Tacana is a wine that brings people together. But its depth and complexity make it perfect for moments spent alone, too. You’ll find that each sip lingers on the palate, gradually revealing new flavors, like mint and black pepper.

Gualfín – and the greater Calchaquí – is a special place. You wear long sleeves and hats to avoid the high intensity UV light. You walk slowly so as not to use too much oxygen. And if you want to make a lot of money in the wine or cattle business, you’re best advised to hop on the next flight out of town.

Yet there’s a feeling, when you’re out riding under the biggest sky you’ve ever seen... or resting your head under millions of bright stars... or listening to huge winds tear across the valley floor... it’s a feeling of freedom... of possibilities as boundless as the open plain itself.

If you've never tasted Tacana before, it’s more intense than the wine you’re probably used to. Great with red meat. Argentines pair it with big steaks, for example...We drink it with everything, everyday!

Today, my brother Will & The Bonner Private Wine Partnership are opening their cellar for a very special offer to my readers...

About the Bonner Private Wine Partnership

Founded by Will Bonner, the Partnership is a group of wine lovers who come together to import great, small batch wines that might otherwise get overlooked by large importers.

No middle men. No additive-packed supermarket wines. No inflated costs.

WE CANNOT SHIP TO THESE STATES:

Arkansas, Delaware, Mississippi, Utah

If you live in one of these states, you’ll need to select an alternative delivery destination.

*Note: Shipping is available to Alaska & Hawaii for additional fee*

Please be aware: We cannot deliver to P.O. boxes.

An adult signature is required for all shipments of alcohol.

A note about our Satisfaction Guarantee: Wines, sadly, are not like power tools. A hardware store can always resell a hammer you used a couple times. Not so for a bottle of wine. Once you pop the cork, it’s a total loss to us. For that reason, we cannot offer full refunds on these offers. But don’t worry, if the wine arrives and there’s something wrong with it, just give us a call and we’ll do what we can to make it right. As a member, your satisfaction is all-important to us.
