Balnaves “The Blend” | 2016 | Coonawarra, Australia
From Australia’s famous Terra Rossa soil
Grown in the blood-red clay of Australia
Balnaves’ Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975 on South Australia’s famed blood-red Terra Rossa strip. Its vines are now fully matured — some reaching 40 years of age. Their maturity, and their struggle in the dense clay and limestone, comes through in an intense nose of berry, smoke, and coffee. Yet this wine knows when to pull back, remaining balanced on the palate with hints of bay leaf, blackcurrant, and eucalyptus
Auctioneer Cabernet Sauvignon | 2018 | Napa Valley, California
A tribute to Michael Broadbent, MW
60% new oak, 40% used
Cab sauv, merlot, & petit verdot
This isn’t one of those insufferable, velvet loafer Napa cabs. Trevor Sheehan, the guy who made this wine, sold his first vintage out of his car (a few barrels of cabernet from Howell Mountain, a high elevation AVA known for deep, complex reds).
In 2020 Trevor released this two-year aged cabernet as a tribute to Michael Broadbent, the 24th master of wine and the founder of auction house Christie’s wine department. The blend has a bit of merlot to give it a long finish, plus a kick of petit verdot to plump out the body. You’ll find cassis, aniseed, and plum (thanks petit verdot) on the nose followed by a fresh spice on the palate (with maybe a hint of toast).
Berceo Reserva (Limited Edition) | 2016 | Haro, Spain
The Gold Medal Rioja
Avg. vine age 40 yrs
90 pts (Wine Enthusiast)
Hand harvested
Founded in 1801, Berceo is the oldest winery in Haro. It is built into a hill – the winemaking process literally flows downhill, eventually winding up in underground galleries that were once the ancient tunnels of old Haro Castle (this type of vertical winemaking process reduces air exposure and disruption of the must).
With 90 points (Wine Enthusiast), and a Gold Medal from Mundus Vini, this limited-edition 2016 combines ancient tradition and ultra-modern technique. The classic Rioja flavors are there – red and black cherry, prune, and tobacco. Plus, 24 months in oak give it a spicy vanilla finish. Note the label – that’s the nearby Suso Monastery, the “cradle of the Spanish language” known for its wine poetry.
Clefs des Murailles Vacqueyras | 2018 | Rhône Valley, France
The Winemaking Dynasty’s Rhône Red
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre
Old Vine
Vacqueyras (Southern Rhône)
In 1854, the Double family acquired the Château de Beaupré, near Aix-en-Provence, where they had previously produced their wine. With the experience gained as part of this well reputed winemakering family, Maxime & Phanette Double (the third generation at the Château de Beaupré) decided to launch their own range of wines.
Outside their small medieval village of Vacqueyras, the ancient limestone mixes with clay and a red pebble topsoil to produce wines that can be a bit of a shotgun blast to the palate, in the manner of a less fussy and more forceful Chateauneuf. What makes Phanette unique is her ability to make Vacqueyras elegant.
That kind of know-how comes only with a deep understanding of the red pebble and limestone clay terroir. The Double’s generational knowledge pays off in this 2018, made by fermenting grenache and mourvedre together, in a traditional manner, while the syrah undergoes carbonic maceration for further extraction of color and flavor. An intense bouquet of wild fruits, strawberry and blueberry in the nose, followed by a graceful, surprisingly well-structured explosion of fruit (plus a hint of licorice?) in the mouth.
Raso de Larrainzar Reserva | 2013 | Navarra, Spain
The French Spaniard
Avg. vine age 30 yrs
90 pts (Suckling)
Traditional Method
The Larrainzar family acquired this estate in the Navarran village of Ayegui 150 years ago. Located relatively close to Bordeaux, Navarra has long been a part of the cultural exchange of French and Spanish winemaking, which lives on in this wine: two indigenous Spanish grapes, tempranillo and garnacha, and two from Bordeaux, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
The Larrainzar winery lies on the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), alongside a ruined monastery and 150-year-old tempranillo vines. Some say Navarra reservas are essentially back-door Riojas. And the stony clay soil here is, geographically speaking, a Rioja Alavesa soil. But the hint of chocolate and spice underneath classic tempranillo flavors of black cherry and plum make this elegant 2013 a wine all its own.
Sunal Salvaje Cachi | 2019 | Calchaquí Valley, Argentina
The Wild Mountain Malbec
8,694 ft.
Single vineyard
6,000 bottles produced
Augustín Lanús and his Sunal wines have been perennial all-stars since our adventure in Calchaquí wine began. But this single-vineyard “Salvaje” is special even by his standards.
Augustín usually favors blending terroirs. Why do a single vineyard?
The answer is Cachi, a terroir at the northernmost edge of the valley, in the foothills of the snowcapped Cachi mountains. It’s the frontier’s frontier, bone dry except for snowmelt that drains easily through the sandy clay soil. To maximize Cachi’s impact, Augustín opted for no oak, and had the wine spend a year in a concrete egg. Despite its name, we found Salvaje to be surprisingly balanced, with cranberry and raspberry playing counterpoint to beets and fig. The noble savage. Only 6,000 bottles made.

A note about our Satisfaction Guarantee: Wines, sadly, are not like power tools. A hardware store can always resell a hammer you used a couple times. Not so for a bottle of wine. Once you pop the cork, it’s a total loss to us. For that reason, we cannot offer full refunds on these offers. But don’t worry, if the wine arrives and there’s something wrong with it, just give us a call and we’ll do what we can to make it right.
