Pago de Otazu | 2018 | Pago de Otazu, Spain
From Will Bonner:
Pago de Otazu is one of a very few Spanish wine estates, one of only 19, declared good enough to be awarded its own appellation by the Spanish government... In fact, it was one of the earliest French-style bodegas in the country, going back to the 1840s...
Only 6,000 bottles were made of this excellent 2018 Merlot and Cabernet blend. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels... This is a big, full-bodied dark red wine with nodes of vanilla, coffee, cherry, and dark fruit...
It is so dark it looks like one of our signature "black wine" malbecs from the extreme altitude terroirs of the north of Argentina... Every time I taste it I'm taken aback by its nimble power...
And our very own Julien Miquel calls it a 'successful Spanish take on a classic Bordeaux blend.

Arca Yaco Imaginate | 2019 | Calchaquí Valley, Argentina
From Will:
Imaginate is the only Malbec in this favorites list and a very special wine...
This is a high altitude Malbec from the Calchaqui Valley, Argentina that has all the hallmark intensity, strong tannins, and dark fruit that you expect from this region... But it also has a controlled smoothness that you notice right away.
Unlike most Malbecs of this variety this wine needs very little aeration or decanting to be smooth, chocolatey, and delicious without the sourness you might encounter with other wines. It's an impressive feat considering that there is no oak used in the fermentation or aging process.
Partnership members will be familiar with winemaker Matias Etchart... Matias is an intense guy. When you meet him you can tell that he puts real heart and care into his small batch wines. He's one of my favorite winemakers in the Calchaqui Valley. He has a lot of passion and a lot to live up to as his family has been making wine in the area since 1850.
Matìas founded Arca Yaco in 2010, and in 2015 vinified the first harvest. Since the beginning his wines (Amar y Vivir, which we featured in our 2021 Argentina collection, as well as Imaginate) have received well-deserved recognition.

Domaine Anita Couer de Vigneronne | 2018 | Beaujolais, France
From Will:
The last wine in this collection, a French Beaujolais, is quite different from the Malbec. But again the excellence, the specialness of wine is due to the focused effort of an artisan winemaker. The name of this wine translates to 'the heart of the winemaker', in this case a woman named Anita Kuhnel of Domaine Anita.
Like the Imaginate, this wine benefits from the intense passion of a unique small vineyard and a personal wine-making operation... which flies under-the-radar of the major wine importers.
This was a wine discovered for the Partnership by our French wine-maker, Julien Miquel. You can watch Julien's tasting of this wine here.
Critics have given this wine 92-94 points. But as Julien says in his tasting video, this vintage is a lot closer to 94 points than 92 and quite excellent...
There was just something about this Beaujolais the first time I tasted it I was transfixed. It was 'meatier' and more complex than your average Beaujolais. It is something special that I'm happy to share with you.

A note about our Satisfaction Guarantee: Wines, sadly, are not like power tools. A hardware store can always resell a hammer you used a couple times. Not so for a bottle of wine. Once you pop the cork, it’s a total loss to us. For that reason, we cannot offer full refunds on these offers. But don’t worry, if the wine arrives and there’s something wrong with it, just give us a call and we’ll do what we can to make it right. As a Bonner Private Wine Partnership member, your satisfaction is all-important to us.
