2018 Cielo Arriba Malbec: A unique vineyard site at over 9,000 ft. in elevation located in one of the newest and most up and coming wine regions of Argentina: Jujuy. This small 10 acre property is nestled in a high altitude mountain canyon. With poor, rocky mountain soils, bright sunny days, and cold mountain nights, this vineyard site produces uniquely intense grapes. Because the vineyards are planted with a majority of malbec interspersed with cabernet franc and syrah, Cielo Arriba is a co-fermentation of malbec with these other varieties, lending complexity and depth to the wine.
Despite coming from northern Argentina, Huichaira is a very cold valley. And it must be because of the height, over 8,850 feet above sea level. There, the Nieva family has two hectares planted in 2014, mainly with malbec, but also with cabernet franc and syrah, all harvested at the same time and co-fermented. It is a wine from a great acidity and deliciously red flavors, refreshing and lively. The influence of the mountain seems to give it that sensation of freshness, of Andean breezes, of herbs that overlap the fruit. A wine of character, to think of a new area that opens on the horizon of Argentine wine”.
