Sunal Ilógico Extreme Altitude (Calchaqui Valley, AR)

Sunal Ilógico Extreme Altitude (Calchaqui Valley, AR)
7,874 ft to 8,950 ft
Zero filtration. Natural fermentation
Malbec

Three and half hours to the north of the Bonner ranch of Gualfin, the vineyard of Luracatao sits at nearly 9,000 feet completely surrounded by mountains. Rocks surrounding the vineyard soak up heat, protecting the vines from freezing at night. When winemaker Augustin Lanus made Sunal for the first time, the inky red color managed to turn his stainless-steel vats bright red! Clean on the palate with notes of fresh berry, herbs, and charred earth. Be ready for a meal!

Anko Flor de Cardon Malbec (Salta, AR)

Anko Flor de Cardon Malbec (Salta, AR)

5,700 ft. avg
1,000 cases only
93 pts (2016 vintage – James Suckling)

The vines of Anko grow in the shadow of giant cacti in the desert lands outside of Salta (the city nearest to the Calchaquí Valley). This is an extremely small batch wine – 1,000 cases only. You’re going to taste the desert – a product of the crushed mica in the razor-thin topsoil. This malbec is also a consistent 90+ winner. Snatch it up while you can.

SOJOURN DURELL VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2017

Durell Vineyard Sojourn 2017 (Sonoma, CA)

Robert Parker: 93 pts, James Suckling: 91 pts; Wine Spectator: 91 pts
Native yeast, un-fined
Chardonnay (Old Wente Clone)

Most of the original chardonnay clones to reach California were lost to Prohibition. C.H. Wente’s clones, however, survived. When many neighboring vineyards were once again threatened by extinction, this time by wildfires, the Old Wente clones of Durell Vineyards once again survived, their grapes harvested at night, just in time. We’ve written at length of our distaste for overly oaky, buttery CA chards. This is not one of them. The nose is a basket of freshly picked citrus and tropicals, with a salivating, silky touch on the palate.

Mahi Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (Marlborough, New Zealand)

Mahi Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (Marlborough, New Zealand)
Robert Parker: 90 pts, James Suckling: 92 pts
Indigenous yeast, 10% fermented wild in barrel
Sauvignon Blanc

“New Zealand sauvignon blancs have no parallel anywhere in the world,” said Karen MacNeil. Brian Bricknell’s Mahi will make you a believer. His nine parcels of sauv blanc have a legendary reputation (he receives hundreds of petitions to work at his vineyard every single year). For each new vintage, he creates a new mix from those parcels, with wild in-barrel fermentation using indigenous yeast. A wine for those long spring summer evenings…
