The argument
Four countries, six grapes, one very tired word
“Red” is the least useful word in wine. It names a colour and implies a style, and the implication is wrong almost every time.
A Gamay from Fleurie and a Nebbiolo from Monferrato are both red. So is a Malbec grown at four thousand feet in the Uco Valley, and a Tempranillo from Toro that spent a year in French oak. Put them beside each other and the family resemblance disappears almost entirely — weight, tannin, acidity, what each one wants on the table next to it. What they share is a pigment.
Which is the argument for taking six different bottles rather than six of one. A case of the same wine teaches you that wine. Six unlike ones teach you what the differences are, and the differences turn out to be most of the subject.
Six grapes, not one
Tempranillo, Malbec, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, a Right Bank Bordeaux blend and old-vine Gamay. No two of them behave alike at dinner.
None of them are supermarket wines
Several are certified organic or farmed without herbicide. One is bottled unfiltered on the waning moon. None are made at a scale that would let a supermarket stock them.
