Agustín Lanús farms Luracatao, a valley above the Calchaquí Valley in Salta. Up there the sun is harder and the nights are colder, so the grapes ripen slowly with thick skins. His first vintage came out so dark it stained the steel vats red. No oak, just concrete. Black olive, violets, blackberry and a graphite edge. In the U.S. it is sold through the Partnership and nowhere else.
It has been grown in these valleys for hundreds of years. Agustín makes it from the same Luracatao valley as the Ilógico because he wants Argentina’s old grapes kept alive. It is pale and light: cherry, kumquat and a wild note of dill, with bright acidity and a little grip. Native yeasts, twelve months in concrete eggs. Give it fifteen minutes in the fridge.
Most people know Beaujolais as the cheap red that turns up in November. Fleurie is one of its ten crus, the named villages where the serious Gamay grows, and it is far better value than Burgundy next door. Sylvain Paturaux’s vines at Domaine des Deux Fontaines are 80 years old and pruned as low bushes. Blackberry, currant, hedgerow berries. James Suckling gave it 93 points. This is the red to chill.
Old vines give fewer grapes, and those grapes carry more. These Torrontés vines in Salta’s Calchaquí Valleys are about seventy years old and were never grafted. They drink Andean snowmelt. Torrontés is Argentina’s own white grape, and this is the bottle to pour with spicy takeout.
Seclantás Adentro is a small estate in the Calchaquí Valleys, started by Virginia Hasenbalg and Ovidiu Corabianu with Raúl Dávalos of Tacuil. The vines are ungrafted and planted at about 2,200 meters. They do as little as they can in the cellar and let the mountain do the rest: intense sun, cold nights, vivid fruit, real freshness. We have 154 bottles of the 2018.
You have probably never seen Airén on a label. Elías López Montero makes this one from a single vineyard outside Tomelloso in La Mancha, planted in 1950 on its own roots and farmed without irrigation. It ages in big clay tinajas. About 7,000 bottles were made. Mineral and a little saline, with citrus, herbal tea and a lemon-caramel finish. Luis Gutiérrez gave it 90+ points in The Wine Advocate. It is the least expensive bottle on this page.
