Why Grenache

A grape that has spent a century in other people’s blends

Most of the Grenache anyone has drunk did not say Grenache anywhere on the bottle. It said Gigondas, or Vacqueyras, or Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the grape did the work while the village took the credit. That is not unfair, exactly. But it does mean most people have no idea what they are drinking.

Here is what it is. Grenache ripens late and likes heat, so it grows where the sun is unreasonable: the southern Rhône, Spain, and, it turns out, a slope at 5,500 feet in the north of the Calchaquí Valley. It makes wine that is pale for its strength, red-fruited rather than black, with the kind of acidity that makes you hungry. It is the grape for lamb, for a Sunday, for the second bottle.

There are four of them in the cellar right now, chosen because they could not be less alike. One from Argentina, where the vines struggle through striped rock and the yields are the lowest on the estate. One from California, where a winemaker named Sonja Magdevski ferments whole clusters with wild yeast and made three thousand bottles. And two from the Rhône villages where the grape has been doing this quietly since before anyone kept score.

Salta, Argentina

Estancia Los Cardones, Tolombón, 5,500 feet. The Tigerstone lots are named for the striped, angular rock in the highest plots. Natural yeast. 93 points from the Wine Advocate, and it does something to grilled lamb that Malbec cannot.

Sta. Rita Hills, California

Three vineyards, three soils, one fog. Whole-cluster fermentation, wild yeast, a year in neutral French oak, grown organically and biodynamically. 96 points from Wine Enthusiast and 3,000 bottles in existence.

Gigondas and Vacqueyras, France

Old vines on limestone and blue marl under the Dentelles de Montmirail, and an old-vine Vacqueyras from 2018 with sixty-seven bottles left. The two villages where Grenache runs the blend and the label never says so.
